Oddities and paradoxes of Berlin Tiergarten park

Tiergarten Park cannot but like. One of the largest parks in the world, with an area of 210 hectares, located in the center of Berlin, with many monuments from different eras, is simply doomed to increased attention from tourists …

Oddities and paradoxes of Berlin Tiergarten park
However, after many hours of walking along the Great Tiergarten, mixed feelings arise – admiration is adjacent to surprise and even bewilderment.

Tiergarten. Victory Column
I want to say right away: it is beautiful, this huge modern descendant of the ancient German forest, stretching from the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate to the Berlin Zoo. With its innumerable alleys, canals, lakes, ponds, bridges, monuments and sculptural compositions, Tiergarten himself gives the impression of some magnificent green monument of German diligence, the love of Berliners for his city. But as they say, you won’t erase a word from a song …

Tiergarten. Canal Landvercanal
I’ll start with the strangeness of the “official”. The sculptural compositions installed at the Fantazallee would be called “military-patriotic themes”. There are four of them, and all of them, judging by the surroundings (clothing, weapons), belong to the period of the First World War. Heavily damaged, some figures lack arms and even heads. There are no inscriptions on the pedestals, only holes similar to bullet holes. There are no explanatory signs. In Berlin, sculptures can be found literally everywhere, among them there are many real, highly artistic works of art, but there are obscure avant-garde delights, and frank kitsch, but there is always some kind of stand or sign with information about the author and the installation date.

Tiergarten. Statues
It can be assumed that these sculptures, in their own way very interesting, were previously installed in some other places and appeared in Tiergarten not too long ago. But this is only my assumption, an enhanced search in Google for photographs, upon returning from Berlin, did not give anything. There are photographs of sculptures on the Web, but no comment. Agree, strange “secrecy.”

Tirgatren. Statues
Unfortunately, traces of the activities of “forest vandals” that spoil trees with inscriptions on the bark can be found in any part of the world and in any green massif. Therefore, when I saw in Tiergarten, on the banks of a picturesque overgrown lake, a huge beech, dotted with autographs of some “Hans”, “Bren” and others, was upset, but was not particularly surprised. I took a picture, but I was not going to publish the picture.

Tiergarten. Vandalism
The surprise came later, at home, when I was preparing this article, browsing the materials on Tiergarten on the Internet and came across an article by a certain Lucy Westphal. Judging by the fact that the article was written in German – a resident of Germany. Lucy enthusiastically wrote about Tiergarten and, in particular, reported that Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” lyrics are carved on the bark of trees there! At first I could not believe it, but Lucy posted a photo. This already, as they say, doesn’t climb into any gates, even the Brandenburg ones … Moreover, all the trees in the park are counted, each has an individual number and, they say, even a passport.

Tiergarten. Vandalism
The oddities of Tiergarten include the fact that the park is quite neglected. But this fact seems strange because Germany, in the minds of our compatriots, is firmly associated with order and discipline. I must say that in Berlin during my stay there it was rather dirty on the streets. But such that in the park, the world-famous Greater Tiergarten, beer bottles were strewn in streams and plastic bags floated (which, by the way, are forbidden to use in Berlin, and they are not in supermarkets), and in the thickets there was an unclean dead wood and heaps of cut dry branches – not expected. I remembered the parks that I saw in other big cities: Moscow, Kiev, Polish Gdansk, the comparison is clearly not in favor of Berlin.

Tiergarten. Garbage
This is all the more strange because I did not see a large influx of people walking in Tiergarten. Although he spent almost the whole day there, besides, the day off was Sunday, and in Berlin there was a terrible 35-degree heat. Some places in the park, picturesque, with beautiful landscape architecture – bridges, fountains, on the contrary, surprised with their deserted nature. And this, most likely, is not an accident, judging by the scanty number of benches in the park.

Tiergarten. Deserter
Probably, the matter is not in the visitors; all these oddities and paradoxes are obviously not on their conscience. The entire infrastructure of the park is concentrated on the outer perimeter of the park, along the large transport routes crossing the Tiergarten – July 17, Gofergerallee and others, where cafes, restaurants, pubs are densely located, there are attractions and playgrounds, an oceanarium, a zoo. There were a lot of people there on the day of my visit, in some places there were even long lines. And in the shady cool alleys, a little off – rare pedestrians and small flocks of cyclists. Also a paradox.
