Measles roams Europe: what is important to know in order not to get sick

Until 1966, measles was considered a disease that could not be defeated. After the invention of the vaccine, humanity gradually forgot about the disease. This is evidenced by optimistic forecasts by WHO (World Health Organization). It was planned that in 2020 the world will be completely free from measles …

Measles roams Europe: what is important to know in order not to get sick
All hopes collapsed after the announcement of statistics on the incidence of the population in Europe. 2016 data suggests that measles, called childhood plague, still roams European countries and leads to death. According to data, only in 2016, 24,000 people were infected with the virus. In 2015, the indicator was 5,000 people.

The growing dynamics continued in 2017. The epidemic struck residents of neighboring Ukraine – doctors recorded 11 deaths out of 23,000 cases of detection of the virus. In total, in Europe, 40,000 people fell ill with measles. Mortality – 37 people.

It is amazing that in the age of new technologies and significant progress in the medical industry, humanity is returning to forgotten diseases that have not bothered the world’s population for more than half a century. The situation is explained by experts from Rospotrebnadzor of Russia and WHO.
What are the leading measles outbreaks?
Over the course of 13 months, through June 2018, the following countries showed maximum performance:

Serbia (for 1 million people 643 cases).

Ukraine with the number of cases of 606 people per 1 million people. During the six months of this year, 13 out of 28,000 patients died.

Georgia – 307 cases per 1 million inhabitants.

Greece – 293 people per 1 million citizens.

Statistics for France, Montenegro, Italy and Romania completes the sad rating.

The sanitary and epidemiological situation with measles in Russia does not cause concern. Health facilities are taking measures to prevent measles outbreaks in the local population. Preventive measures are being taken, namely, additional immunization of citizens who were not vaccinated in a timely manner.

The incidence rate in Russia is 13 people per 1 million people. Of the reported cases, almost all cases are residents of other countries who, for one reason or another, arrived in Russia.
What is the cause of measles?
The main reason for measles outbreaks is refusal of vaccinations. According to the Rospotrebnadzor of the Russian Federation, 90% of patients are patients who, for objective or subjective reasons, have not been vaccinated. Basically, these are people from among refugees, gypsy communities, etc. Most of the patients are patients under the age of 18, that is, children. And in almost every case, doctors say there is no vaccination.

What are the methods and principles of the spread of the disease

Measles distribution concept – airborne droplet. The virus enters the body through contact with an infected person or the surface on which the bacteria got due to coughing or sneezing of the patient.

For several hours, the bacteria remain active, but at the same time, hygiene, disinfection and household cleaning products are excellently fought with them. In general, if after visiting the street, wash your hands thoroughly, preferably with bactericidal soap, then the risk of the virus entering the body is reduced to zero.
Measles harms adults more than children
WHO data suggests that 13,4,200 measles children died globally in 2015. According to Elena Tivanova, a leading expert at the Center for Molecular Diagnostics (CMD) of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare, measles is the main cause of death in children under 5 years old.

Fatal cases are observed against the background of complications caused by measles. The disease suppresses the immunity of a fragile child’s body, resulting in secondary bacterial infections. The most vulnerable to the disease are the mucous membranes and the lymphatic system. Secondary infections predominantly harm the respiratory system and the ENT system.

It is more difficult for kids to transfer measles than for preschoolers. Severe complications are manifested more in the adult body than in children. The worst of them are encephalitis (a group of inflammatory processes that affect the human brain), diarrhea, followed by dehydration, and blindness. Less dangerous are bronchopneumonia, otitis media, laryngitis, inflammatory processes in the region of cervical lymph nodes.

Severe consequences of measles for pregnant women. Miscarriages, premature births are not excluded. The fetus may develop pathology of the lungs and heart failure.
What to do to a person who is not informed about the availability of vaccination
The possibilities of modern medicine make it possible to determine whether there are IgG antibodies in the body that counteract the virus. To do this, it is enough to take a special blood test. Its results will show how effectively the immune system is ready to fight measles. If such antibodies were not found in the blood, then vaccination is necessary.
