How not to die in a hike in winter
In the Middle Urals, a terrible state of emergency occurred. On January 19, two girls got lost during a trip to the Sukhogorsk stone. As a result, one died, the second was found with frostbite on the legs. We asked the experts why the tragedy could happen and how to prevent such incidents …
One girl died, the second was discovered with frostbite
On the morning of January 19, a company of five tourists arrived at the Serebryansky Stone camp site, and decided to climb the high point of the Sukhogorsk Stone Mountain. There were three girls and two guys in the company. The distance from the base to the top is 12 kilometers.
During the trip, snowfall began, as a result of which the group of tourists split up. Two girls lost their companions and got lost. They had to spend three days in the open, and there was severe frost on the street. From food they had only one bar of chocolate, and nothing more. As it turned out, the girls even had nothing to light a fire, because the lighter was not working. All the girls ’belongings, including knives, axes, a navigator, and food, were in the boys’ backpacks. When the Emergencies Ministry team managed to find the missing girls, one of them (Elena Podkorytova) no longer showed signs of life.
Elena Osipova, the second girl who got lost, greatly weakened, but was alive. When rescuers arrived, she could not even move her hand. A jacket was unbuttoned on Elena Osipova, as it turned out, she wanted to give a sign to the helicopter, but there was no more strength for such actions. The girl was taken to the hospital, and the doctors managed to bring her to her senses, but her feet were badly frostbite, and they had to be amputated.
Rescuers had to investigate about 115 kilometers in three days before they found the missing girls. It was not possible to detect women’s mobile phones, because in that direction there was one tower in the small village of Kytlym, and at least two or three are needed to determine the coordinates. Ito, in such a situation, it was possible to determine the approximate area for the search, plus or minus a kilometer. So the Ministry of Emergency Situations immediately discarded this option.
When the girls were found, they were on the slope of the Kazan Stone mountain. Not far from them was a path leading to the valley, but a layer of snow two meters high did not allow the girls to reach it. If they had skis or snowshoes, they would be able to find the trail. From the location of women to the gorge near Mount Semichaleveche was only 800 meters. It was impossible to find back on the path leading towards the camp site, because the tracks were covered with snow, and visibility was poor.
The lost girls tried to find a path on their own, they wandered there and there and gradually retired towards the valley. When there was no strength to continue the journey, the girls crouched under the Christmas tree and stayed there to wait.
During the operation to rescue the missing tourists, rescuers searched on the outskirts of the forest, and periodically called for women, making minute pauses. In one of these pauses, the rescuers heard a quiet response, the Ministry of Emergency Situations were only thirty meters from the missing tourists. Unfortunately, one girl was already dead, but the rescuers were aware of the death of one Irina, because the second managed to make a call and warn that about four in the morning her friend stopped breathing, and the caller herself lost the ability to move.
When the rescued woman warmed up and came to her senses, she was able to tell why it happened that all the things were left with the guys in their backpacks. Irina Osokina said: “We counted on the help of the group, and thought they would look for us, but it turned out the other way around, which is why this terrible emergency happened.”
Rescuers were helped by the fact that the surviving girl was able to make a call. The operators found the approximate radius of the search and reported this information to the rescuers. This helped to reduce the search radius and accelerated the finding of girls.
The Emergencies Ministry team told reporters: “If it were not for this important call, we would not be able to find them, maybe then the tourists or an occasional hunter would find the girls.” More rescuers added: “What was the main mistake of the girls was their separation from the rest of the group.”
The director of the local camp site, Alexander Podolsky, together with the Emergencies Ministry team helped to search for the missing girls. According to him, the tourists could calmly make the ascent to the top while it was still light, but for some unknown reason they couldn’t do it. “Perhaps they often took rests, maybe stopped to take pictures against the backdrop of nature or stopped to cook, so they didn’t have enough time. ” In addition to the fact that the group did not plan its time, they made some more serious mistakes.
To safely conquer the mountain peaks, you must have a couple of people who have experience in such trips. The group should have a guide, leading the expedition, and the closure. Tourists, judging by the sad result, did not find such people, and this was their main mistake.
